What does pelvic floor rehabilitation consist of?

Pelvic floor rehabilitation involves improving the work of the muscles that make up the pelvic brim. Rehabilitation is performed using modern physiotherapeutic methods. The basis of rehabilitation addressing the pelvic floor is specialized gymnastic exercises, which strengthen not only the pelvic floor but also improve the overall fitness and posture of patients.

Pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation – who is it for?

Abnormal functioning of the pelvic floor muscles (hypotonia or hypertonia) – can result in problems such as urinary, gas, and fecal incontinence. In pregnant women and after natural childbirth, pelvic muscles can be weakened or stretched, often resulting in problems with incontinence. In such situations, it is necessary to use therapy for the muscles that make up the pelvic brim. Rehabilitation of the pelvic floor muscles is aimed at restoring normal muscle elasticity and returning to healthy urogenital function.

General indications for pelvic floor rehabilitation sessions:

  • stress urinary incontinence (coughing, sneezing, laughing, stumbling – causes involuntary urination)

  • urge (sudden urge to urinate)

  • overactive bladder (too frequent urination in small amounts)

  • gas or fecal incontinence

  • constipation, diarrhea

  • problems with urination

  • feeling of urine retention

  • sagging of the pelvic organs

  • sexual problems – lack of erection, pain during intercourse

  • history of pregnancy and natural childbirth – a preventative visit is advisable to assess muscle function and avert possible incontinence

  • pelvic floor training, as part of comprehensive therapy in spinal pain syndromes

  • preparation for gynecological procedures and physiotherapy after procedures

Pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation – what are the main principles of physiotherapy relating to pelvic floor rehabilitation at Kinespa?

The main goals of pelvic floor rehabilitation include increasing awareness of one’s own body by re-educating posture, breathing, and eliminating nervous habits, learning how to optimally contract pelvic floor muscles, as well as making pelvic structures more flexible, and improving blood supply.

At our Kinespa Clinic, we provide patients with an intimate atmosphere, discretion, and an individual approach where we implement the therapy on a case-by-case basis. Before initiating therapy, we conduct a detailed interview with the patient and asses the pelvic floor muscles.

At Kinespa, pelvic floor physiotherapy is a painless and non-invasive type of therapy. The course of physiotherapy sessions is directly adapted to the specific needs of each patient.
